Cybercrime and protecting remote workers

Tom Kellermann, head of cybersecurity strategy for VMware, discusses the massive cybercrime wave impacting the U.S. He cites an FBI report that found a 400% increase in cyber-intrusions this year. It’s because COVID-19 in general has been a boon for cybercriminals, Kellermann says.

More and more criminals are joining dark web forums and acquiring attack capabilities, like ransomeware, to leverage against organizations, he says.

Compounding the risks is that security operations teams are now virtual themselves, and so the worst-case scenario has really changed. Organizations will see more “island hopping” as hackers commandeer teleworkers’ environments and tunnel to compromise entire networks, he says.

Kellermann shares details about sectors most at risk in this interview.

He was filmed in October 2020 for the virtual CyberTalks event produced by Scoop News Group.
