'Shields Up': the new normal in cyberspace

"When will we be able to put our shields down?" CISA Director Jen Easterly and National Cyber Director Chris Inglis asked in an op-ed Monday morning for CyberScoop. It's a reference to the CISA "Shields Up" initiative, for which the agency issued an alert following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Going forward, the pair wrote, "We need an approach that is as audacious as well as actionable, protective as well as practical." Check out the full op-ed.

Privacy legislation … finally!

Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., and Reps. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., and Frank Pallone, D-Mass. Introduced a draft of comprehensive privacy legislation Friday. The 64-page privacy framework introduces a range of changes designed to give consumers more control over their data. It would require covered companies to limit data collection, allow consumers to turn off targeted advertisements, grant broad protections for Americans against discriminatory uses of their data and rein in third-party data collection. The legislation got praise from civil society groups for getting the ball rolling but they say there's still a lot to iron out. Tonya Riley has the rundown.

CISA urges updates to some Dominion voting machines

CISA said Friday that states using the Dominion Voting Systems Democracy Suite ImageCast X ballot marking device should review those machines for possible vulnerabilities and mitigate them as soon as possible. A pair of election security experts first identified the vulnerabilities and filed a report under seal as part of a lawsuit in Georgia, but then also shared the findings with CISA in February. The agency says there's no indication that the vulnerabilities were ever exploited during an election, and additionally that many are impractical to execute in the real world. AJ Vicens explains.

Watch your money

Losses from cryptocurrency fraud climbed to over $1 billion between January 2021 through March 2022, according to data the Federal Trade Commission released Friday. The number is a steep climb from the $80 million in losses the FTC reported last year for a six-month period between October 2020 and March 2021. The FTC also reported large losses in cryptocurrency from romance scams — in which a criminal poses as a love interest to get a victim to send money or invest — and scams in which criminals impersonated a government agency. Tonya has the latest scam news.
