Ukrainian cyber officials recount how they prepared cyber defenses for Russian invasion

Four Ukrainian cyber officials speaking at a Fordham University and FBI-hosted cyber conference this week said a series of January DDoS and wiper attacks helped them bolster their cyber defenses in advance of Russian's Feb. 24 invasion. “For us it was like a full dress rehearsal,” said Illya Vityuk, head of the cybersecurity department of the Ukrainian State Security Service. The FBI flew the Ukrainian officials to New York and will bring them to Washington next week for meetings with more officials. Suzanne Smalley has the story.

Researchers uncover potential ransomware network with U.S. connections

On Thursday, the cybersecurity company Censys released research that exposed technical infrastructure containing software for web vulnerability scanning, penetration testing, command and control and executable files linked to MedusaLocker ransomware. It's not clear whether this network is connected to prior attacks, but it certainly could have been and could be in the future, the researchers said. They published the data in hopes of getting more security researchers to examine the network.   AJ Vicens reports.

Cyber criminals attack Ukrainian radio network, broadcast fake message about Zelensky's health

Cyber criminals targeted one of Ukraine's largest radio providers Thursday in order to play a message claiming that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was in critical condition and under intensive care, Ukrainian officials said. Zelensky posted a video from his office saying he was fine, and blamed the Russians for the attack, but not many details were released. The company confirmed the incident on its Facebook page, and a video taken inside a car showing the message being played over the radio. More from AJ.

Labor Department announces 120-day cybersecurity apprenticeship sprint

The Department of Labor is promoting registered apprenticeships as a way for industry sectors to train skilled cybersecurity workers with a 120-day sprint. Together with the White House Office of the National Cyber Director, Department of Commerce and other agencies, DOL will recruit employers, industry sector associations, labor unions, educational providers, and community-based organizations to join or launch registered apprenticeships through National Apprenticeship Week running Nov. 12-20, 2022. New York's cybersecurity operations center expands service

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said Thursday that the state’s 62 counties and several city governments can begin subscribing to an endpoint detection and response service as part of a new shared cybersecurity services program. In a press release, Hochul and other state officials said the $30 million program will give local governments access to a detection platform developed by the security technology firm CrowdStrike.
