Mandiant and Google make it official. Researchers continue to quantify the cyberthreats against Ukraine and the rest of Europe. And what's up with Conti now? This is CyberScoop for March 8.

Mandiant’s suitor is Google Cloud

Google has a “definitive agreement” to acquire cybersecurity giant Mandiant for about $5.4 billion in a deal that will close at an undetermined time later this year, the companies said Tuesday. Mandiant will join the Google Cloud unit, specifically, with the goal of boosting its security offerings, the companies said. Existing Mandiant customers, meanwhile, will benefit from the reach of Google Cloud’s lineup of products, partners and services, said Phil Venables, the CISO for Google Cloud. Mandiant CEO Kevin Mandia said the overall goal is to automate and scale up as much of that company’s work as possible. Joe Warminsky reports.

Researchers see flurry of cyber ops against backdrop of Russia's war on Ukraine

Researches with Google's Threat Analysis Group and Proofpoint say they're seeing a flurry of cyber operations directed at Ukraine, Poland, European governments and other organizations, with evidence pointing back to Russia, Belarus and China. In separately published findings, the researchers document multiple credential harvesting campaigns, attempts to install backdoors and other espionage-related malware. AJ Vicens has the details.

Conti is issuing new ransom demands just 10 days after chat leaks

Vitali Kremez, CEO of AdvIntel, told CyberScoop that ransomware gang Conti targeted two U.S.-based corporations this week, one sign among many that the Russian ransomware gang is ramping back up. Analysts said that after a brief slowdown in the immediate aftermath of the leaks, Conti phishing attempts and botnet activity is on the rise. John Shier, a senior security adviser at Sophos, said Conti has posted more than a half-dozen data dumps to its extortion site since Saturday. Suzanne Smalley has the story.

Cloudflare and others try to pick sides carefully

As Russia's brutal war on Ukraine rages on, the companies that make the internet actually work are increasingly making public where they stand on doing continued business with Russia. On Monday, major anti-DDoS firms Cloudflare and Akamai issued statements condemning the war but saying they would still perform services. Those announcements followed a statement last week from Amazon Web Services saying it would continue its policy of not doing business with the Russian government, but that its services would still be available to companies working in Russia, under certain conditions. Imperva said Monday it was suspending all business in Russia. AJ has this one, too.

All the news fit to hack

Digital media company PressReader was hit with a cyberattack late last week, the company confirmed Monday on Twitter, but its operations are now fully up and running — though some content published during the delay in operations is still being uploaded. The company said it did not see any evidence that customer data was compromised in the attack. The incident came just days after the site pulled Russian publications. There is no evidence the two events are related. Tonya Riley reports.
