We know who Biden wants to lead CISA. The president issues marching orders to intel agencies. And Congress takes an interest in Parler. This is CyberScoop for Friday, Jan. 22, 2021.

Meet the new choice for CISA director

The Biden administration is expected to tap Rob Silvers, a former DHS cybersecurity official in the Obama administration, to lead CISA, two people familiar with the matter told CyberScoop. A close confidant of Alejandro Mayorkas, the DHS secretary nominee, Silvers has experience responding to the 2016 Russian election interference. Now, he’ll be tasked with cleaning up another suspected Russian hack in the SolarWinds breach. Sean Lyngaas has more.

Biden to intel agencies: Get to work on SolarWinds

In his first days in office, President Joe Biden is telling U.S. intelligence agencies to get to the bottom of the historic SolarWinds hacking campaign. Biden is ordering an assessment of the hack, along with one of Russian interference in 2020, the poisoning of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny and reports of Russian bounties on U.S. soldiers, the White House said Thursday. It shows how the response to SolarWinds will shape the early days of Biden’s administration. Sean breaks it down.

Congressional scrutiny of Parler deepens

The House Oversight and Reform Committee on Thursday asked the FBI to investigate Parler’s role in the storming of the Capitol earlier this month, and its possible ties to Russia. Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., has also requested that FBI Director Christopher Wray order an investigation into Parler’s financing. The request comes amid concerns that Parler has found new support from a Russian-owned technology firm after Apple, Google and Amazon sought to impede the social media app's operations. 'Hacked' infographic forces early release of Intel report

Intel Corp. did something a little unusual Thursday afternoon: It dropped its latest financial results a few minutes before the closing bell of the stock market, rather than after trading had ended. The reason? An infographic from the report had been leaked early because the company's public relations website had been "hacked," as one Intel executive explained to the Financial Times. Intel decided to release the entire report early, ostensibly to cut off the effects of the leaked information on its stock. Joe Warminsky has more.

DHS program 'supercharging' collaboration with states

Among the long list of nonmilitary provisions in the big fiscal 2020 defense bill was legislation to place cybersecurity advisers employed by the Department of Homeland Security in every state government. One of the sponsors, Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-N.H., says it's a concrete example of the federal government's commitment to closing gaps in cyberthreat information. “We must fundamentally change our approach to cyber threats, and that starts with supercharging the coordination and collaboration the federal government has with states, as well as the private sector,” Hassan told the National Governors Association on Thursday. StateScoop's Benjamin Freed reports.
